One of the three principles of Freemasonry is Charity, It is said to be one of the defining characteristics of a Freemason's heart, and is probably what most masons think of when they talk about their experiences with non-masons. As Masons we are encouraged to support masonic charities, as well as other national and local ones. Pegasus Lodge is always ready to play its part, and many of our members give their time as well as money to help support all sorts of good causes.
Every few years each Province holds a charity festival. This is a big push, usually over 5 years, to support one of the Central Masonic Charities, and Pegasus Lodge is proud to be a Patron of three out of four of these. Outside of the festival period our time and money is spent looking after charities that may be locally based, or that have a particular resonance with our members.
Each year, when we Install a new Worshipful Master, it is traditional that he nominates a charity or charities for the lodge to support during the year. Most of our fund-raising comes through raffles at various events. We hold an annual Ladies festival, summer barbecue, and Christmas dinner. Sometimes quiz nights, race nights, or golf days are organised with the Aylesbury centre or the Province. During a festival, members are encouraged to use regular giving by direct debit or standing order, so that a small amount each month becomes a substantial sum when multiplied over the festival period. However, any charitable giving is always voluntary, and always without detriment to a member or his family.
